Michel Galiana (c) 1991

X THE BELLS The bells have been sounding the candid birth anthem. Life on your finger has slipped its ponderous ring, But a still deeper song vibrates in your bosom And gleams like some water in your childish babbling. The bells are now sounding the bright wedding anthem. The groom on your finger will slip the only ring. All that was - and was loved - all is burnt in a flame And the flower-strewn path to the grave is leading. The bells some day will toll the sad burial anthem. The groom on gnarled fingers will slip the final ring And the deep and panting death rattle will quieten Down and will in the grave's final peace at last sink. The bells, along your path, gave rhythm to your steps. Each tolling ring of them has thrown one of your hours To the hours spent, and what you heard were all regrets Of those unpicked and for ever withered flowers.

Note :

It is evident that young Michel was inspired to write this poem by the song composed by the Swiss Jean Villard-Gilles "Les trois cloches" (Three Bells), recorded in 1946 by Edith Piaf and the Compagnons de la Chanson, but he added a stanza on the theme "carpe diem". The English words added by Dick Manning are as follows:

There’s a village hidden deep in the valley Among the pine trees half forlorn And there on a sunny morning Little jimmy brown was born
(bung, bung, bung, bung) All the chapel bells were ringing in the little valley town And the song that they were singing was for baby jimmy brown Then the little congregation prayed for guidance from above Lead us not into temptation, bless this hour of meditation Guide him with eternal love

There’s a village hidden deep in the valley Beneath the mountains high above And there, twenty years thereafter Jimmy was to meet his love
(bung, bung, bung, bung) All the chapel bells were ringing, ’twas a great day in his life ’cause the songs that they were singing was for jimmy and his wife Then the little congregation prayed for guidance from above Lead us not into temptation, bless, oh lord this celebration May their lives be filled with love

From the village hidden deep in the valley One rainy morning dark and gray A soul winged it’s way to heaven Jimmy brown had passed away
(bung, bung, bung, bung) Just a lonely bell was ringing in the little valley town ’twas farewell that it was singing to our little jimmy brown And the little congregation prayed for guidance from above Lead us not into temptation, may his soul find the salvation Of thy great eternal love
