which appears in the song "Bonny banks of Loch Lomond" (Gow: "Complete Repository - Part 4" 1817)

On the bonnie, bonnie banks O' Loch Lomond.

2. 'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side O' Ben Lomon',
Where in purple hue the Hieland hills we view,

The song refers to two of Bonnie Prince Charlie 's
men left behind in Carlisle after his retreat from England.
One was to be executed, the other released. The Spirit
of the dead soldier travelling by the 'low road' would
reach Scotland before his comrade, struggling over miles
of high rugged country.

Il s'agit de deux soldats de Bonnie Prince Charlie
arrêtés à Carlisle après sa retraite d'Angleterre.
L'un, marié, fut condamné à mort, l'autre relaché. L'ombre
du mort, cheminant sur le 'bas sentier' rejoindra
l'Ecosse avant son camarade, qui devra parcourir
bien des lieues sur des routes accidentées.
