RAIN ON GRAND PRIORY SQUARE The arrogant blazon in scornful height towers Above the simpering gables across the square - A stone spinet marking out half-tones of an air Prompting those on the mail to embrace each other. But on the dwellings that a sullen cloud has framed, The leafy trees under which we persist to stay, An intruder alights and, in a cautious way, Tries a chord of foliage, a sketch of serenade. A scent of wild grasses and of dug-over grounds Rises, persists, prevails and unleashes the bounds Of kicking stallions whose stampede overpowers The palaces that sink likewise into a pond, Blurs the magnificent houses' upper front: The roofs, the trees, the square, all is caught by the shower. L'Ordre Souverain et Militaire de St Jean de Jérusalem, Rhodes et Malte fonda le Prieuré de Bohême à Prague en 1183. L'histoire de l'Ordre est commémorée en plusieurs endroits dans la Mala Strana. A quelques pas des tours des ponts Charles et Judith se trouvent la Place Maltaise et celle du Grand Prieur. A l'extrémité nord de la Place Maltaise s'élève une statue de St Jean Baptiste - qui décorait une fontaine érigée en 1715 pour marquer la fin d'une épidémie de peste. Au nord de la Place du Grand Prieur se trouve l'ancien siège du Grand Prieur de Bohême. Sous sa forme actuelle, le palais date des années 1720. Michel visita Prague avant la chûte du communisme. Depuis, une grande fresque murale consacrée au musicien John Lennon orne le mur du jardin du Grand Prieur, et ce, depuis la mort de l'artiste. La roue du Moulin du Grand Prieur a été complètement restaurée et tourne dans un bief latéral de la Moldau, appelé "la Venise de Prague." C'est également dans cette zone que se trouve l'église de Notre Dame sous les Chaînes dont les deux tours massives rappellent l'époque où le prieuré était fortifié. Elle fut offerte aux Chevaliers de Saint Jean par le roi Vladislas II. Elle occupait le centre du monastère solidement fortifié par les chevaliers, pour garder l'accès de ancien Pont Judith, précurseur du fameux Pont Charles. Le nom de l'église fait allusion à la chaîne utilisée au Moyen Age pour fermer le portail du monastère.

The Sovereign Military Order of St.John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta founded the Priory of Bohemia in Prague in 1183. The history of the Order is commemorated in several place names in the Lesser Town. A short walk from the Charles and Judith Bridge towers lies Maltese Square and Grand Priory Square. At the northern end of Maltese Square is a statue of St John the Baptist - part of a fountain erected in 1715 to mark the end of a plague epidemic. At the northern end of Grand Priory Square is the former seat of the Grand Prior. In its present form the palace dates from the 1720s. Michel visited Prague before the fall of Communism. Since then a large mural of pop musician John Lennon has decorated the wall of the Grand Prior's garden since his death. The wheel of the Grand Prior's Mill has been totally restored and runs in a short side-channel of the Vltava river known as the "Venice of Prague." Also in this area is the church Our Lady Beneath the Chain, which has two massive towers dating from the time when this was a fortified priory and was presented to the Knights of St John by King Vladislav II. It stood in the centre of the Knights' heavily fortified monastery, which guarded the approach to the old Judith Bridge, precursor of the Charles Bridge. The church's name refers to the chain used during the Middle Ages to close the monastery gatehouse.
