Michel Galiana (c) 1990

X-2 SPRING MADRIGAL In order that ages which haunted your nascence Be allowed the loss of its yard's freshness to shun, Your bosom has gathered from the rose the essence, While the red carnations' blood to your lips did run. Your hair was an ocean where weak vessels would wreck, Your body a grotto that one shout fills and grieves - Lavish Boboli Hill, short-lasting firework, For flesh is the humus where instants bud to leaves! While your subsiding chant slowly goes to an end, I shall be able to foil the vermin's attempt And retain in my words what your April has been. From term or vacancy my garden is exempt. Busy ado shall there preserve your inmost sense And desire never be fruitless or stained of sin.

Note :

Apparently, a charming madrigal in Ronsard's fashion: female beauty is subjected to decay. But the poet can help… But, considering that this poem is part of the series dedicated to the Garden of the Hesperides, it is doubtful that it be only that. The Boboli Hill is the garden of Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
