I WINTER MORNING Under the icy frost, hark, a gentle song flows: Birds enshrined in cages cast on the house their spell. But nothing could enthrall the heather seed that grows, A pitiless riot that would break any jail. Winter who always come to whoever calls you, After so many springs, tell me which strings to pinch! In peacefulness and death your wisdom is aglow. The sky is wan and mild like the chirp of a finch. To walk again the path! The old song to echo! December 2nd 1989

Note :

Romantic poets liked to extoll autumn. Michel prefers winter, when the necessary death of nature prepares the return to life. The warbling of the caged bird symbolizes the vain efforts of muddled activism which claims to deny this reality.
