XVII IF EMERGING FROM SLEEP
If, emerging from sleep, in a blurred sky landscape,
By its mirrored image, common sense, overcome,
Your mind carries ahead on the edge of the town
And is panting with thirst, and the saps in you ache,
And when patches of light on pavements and dreams lie
And immobility has become a prison,
A choir stubbornly chains you up: the orison
Of the gardens, muffled by the sun shining high.
- Monochrome flights of stairs on drowsiness linger -
Mock Lancelot, climb up, don't challenge the wrestlers!
The tigers on the lawns are drifting and fading.
The closed garden is still, so is the darkening lounge
Where your awakening's mate complains that in this strange
Dream now fraying away, she has been but a ring.
