ELEGIE D'HIVER

WINTER ELEGY
In winter my mind flows to the source of voices.
Which thirsty lip would not know the spot where they rose?
Scattered frost that the wind on the branches poises
Brings back the fragrances that charmed the child I was.
I swore once that this child in me never should die,
Nor should the stubborn dawn to which clung on its dream.
I hear a hunter's call sounding high in the sky.
And age is a challenge that the years hardly screen.
Child, I had promised you blue skye and sparkling jewels,
That my heart would resist the sharp blade of despair,
That I would build for you, beyond wind, clay and pools,
So perfect an abode that childhood could dwell there.
I return there and see: The banks of the white pond
Are strewn with withered rush, footprints going astray
On the snow. The wind swept oblivion's towers around
And cleared the shattered stones that obstructed my way.
No brook is stubborn like the tears a child has shed.
No song is obstinate like a lullaby hushed.
I made the brook flow back, I redeemed my years spent
And found again the place where my pain had flourished.
Roses of bygone times bend together to bowers.
Here is the crumbling wall, the garden, the arbour...
Winter spins on the panes thin foliation covers
And my songs and my sighs merge to the same clamour.
Nothing but mere hideouts! What bad glance on display!
His naughty laugh resounds like the horn on Doomsday!
In his adamant soul with the angel a strife!
For beast and tramp in him the time to rise has come:
They have broken the wall, with the wind they have blown,
Have lit in his eyes abysses that in him thrive.
I had promised blue skies to you who had the fire.
But Lancelot returned, dismounted, from the quest
From which he brought nothing, no Grail or Golden Fleece,
Ignored by the Queen and subjected to jest;
Had nothing to boast of but the fraud gloriousness
Of butterflies fluttering around a frontispiece.
Winter is that poor child whose smile never could dawn,
On whose bed were scattered maps for distant careers.
But all the routes you take, some day carry you home.
All you caught in your nets of regrets are the years
And this strange face of yours that time shaped of its loam.
Beyond flesh, beyond time I hear voices that rise.
They tell of journey's end, of frost and of decay.
My friends, destroy that wall that my better self hides
And since frost unites things that went each its own way
Winter, fist clutching me, be pearl, give me your lights!
