XIX IDYLLE
Au bois l'automne a pris les couples et les voix;
Brisait l'enclos des mains sur son mystère jointes;

XIX ROMANCE
In my heart's secret wood where we had gone astray,
Autumn had heaped a maze of rocks and brown heather,
But songs that hardly had reached our ears fled away,
As did the promises your eyes feigned to utter.
From this wood autumn has removed hunters' applause
And warbling in the night that kept the boughs trembling.
Which echo has caught them, thus suppressing the laws
Urging the pallid dawn to yield to grey morning?
Around your neck sparkled a bright lace of sorrow.
Frost had wrought for my stars a winter embedding,
Since for your words it failed to clear a path to go
Closing the humid glade where hatred is lurking.
I fled along lanes where spring's tide was on the flow,
With periwinkle beds waving in festive glee.
A pack of hounds tracked down a unicorn. I know
Secrets of my own that lightning disclosed to me.
As light did not pervade higher up than its gird,
The child pointed at the blue sky above the roof,
But the dark brightness that the streaking flash had stirred
Exposed the mystery held in its hands aloof.
I knew my demon. I vanquished him with my fist.
You told me of wine fermenting in my hideout,
But stronger elation is poured by dreams and mist
When all along my way, singer, my stanzas sprout.
Scent of lilac blossoms has filled our last evening.
Rubbed out in summer's gleam is forever your face.
But of you I'll retain, beside faint hope, nothing,
Who has revealed to me this quirk time won't debase.
